Adaptation means tools and measures with which we can prepare for the consequences of climate change and reduce the vulnerabilities of our society and environment. Adaptation is necessary as we are committed to at least some level of climate change with the greenhouse gases already emitted to the atmosphere.

As the climate changes, mean temperature will continue to rise and precipitation will increase particularly in winter. Torrential rains will become more intense causing urban flooding.

The Helsinki Metropolitan Area cities, regional authorities and other regional actors have prepared a joint climate change adaptation strategy that was published in 2012. In the strategy work, regional climate impacts were studied and adaptation policies were defined.
